As far back as the Shang and Zhou Dynasties (1600BC-771BC), there had been human activities in the area of today’s Cangnan. During the Spring and Autumn Period (770BC-476BC), the Yue people of Eastern Ou lived in this area, and in the Warring States Period (475BC-221BC) the area was part of the State of Yue. After the State of Qin unified China, it was within the jurisdiction of the Central Fujian Prefecture. In 202 BC, when Gaozu, the first emperor of the Han Dynasty, founded the Yue State of Fujian in the former area of the Central Fujian Prefecture, it became a colony of the Yue State of Fujian. In 192 BC, Zouyao was crowned prince of the East Sea, founding the capital in Eastern Ou (Wenzhou now) and known as the king of the Eastern Ou Kingdom, and then the place was under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Ou Kingdom. During the reign of Emperor Wu, the Eastern Ou Kingdom was forced to move the whole nation to the Yangtze-Huaihe Valley and thereupon its rule in south Zhejiang ended. In 85 BC, today’s Cangnan was part of Huipu County, and since then it has been subordinated to Zhang’an, Yongning, Anyang, Angu, Shiyang, Hengyang, Yongjia and Pingyang Counties in succession.
